How to Add Variety to Your Life – The Lucky Saturdays Game

It’s Saturday afternoon, you’re sitting there trying to figure out what to do. One friend has an idea, your girlfriend wants to do something else, and you just want somebody to make a decision. In the end, you just do the same thing you always do, and no one is totally satisfied.

My suggestion: Let chance decide for you.

My fiancé and I created a game that’s turned out to be super fun. It’s led us on all kinds of adventures we’d never have experienced. When I shared it with some friends, they loved it as well.

The game is called Lucky Saturdays, but you can play it anytime you like.

How to play Lucky Saturdays:

  1. Write down a list of things you’d like to do (I suggest 4 to 8 items), such as:
    • See new movie
    • Go to the beach and eat ice cream
    • Rent kayaks and paddle somewhere cool
    • Drive to nearby city and have a night out.
  2. Feel free to include both normal/cheap options and far-out/expensive options.
  3. Far-out/expensive options are fun to include, but remember, if it gets chosen you HAVE TO DO IT. Therefore, I suggest you give them a lower probability. Danielle and I sometimes put an option to fly to Rio de Janeiro, but with only a 2% probability.
  4. Assign probabilities to each option.
  5. Use coin-flipping, or straw-drawing or a random number generator to pick your choice. I think coin flips are the most fun. You can use coin flips in a tournament style elimination.
  6. Now that your choice is made, get to it. Go do what fate decided for you.
